This next one was a special request from my 4 year old &#8211; crystal holly!<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"info-box\">\n<h3 class=\"general\">Suitable for<\/h3>\n<p>I&#8217;d recommend this activity for <a href=\"https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/7-9years\/\">primary (elementary) school aged kids<\/a>. Younger kids (<a href=\"https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/5-6years\/\">5-6 year olds<\/a>) could also give it a try, with assistance. This was too tricky for my 4 year old, but she watched with earnest, assisting where she could.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>We made these in much the same way that we made our <a href=\"https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/crystal-christmas-tree-ornaments\/\">crystal Christmas trees<\/a> earlier. I&#8217;ll repeat the main steps below.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>\n<h2>How to make crystal Holly Christmas Ornaments<\/h2>\n<p class=\"hide-in-excerpt\" style=\"text-align: right;\"><span style=\"font-size: small;\">contains affiliate links<sup>*<\/sup> to similar products<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>You&#8217;ll need:<\/h3>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2gxy9YN\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">Borax<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Green and red 6mm furry <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2fYcYvz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">pipe cleaners<\/a> (aka chenille stems)<\/li>\n<li>recycled glass jar (tall enough that the holly can easily dangle inside)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2fmWjDl\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">invisible nylon thread<\/a><\/li>\n<li>chopstick<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2gbTkeG\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">safety glasses<\/a> (optional, but recommended. We have <a href=\"https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/safety-glasses-adjust-kids\/\" target=\"_blank\">these ones<\/a>.)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div>\n<div>\n<h3>What to do:<\/h3>\n<p>1. Fold the green pipe cleaner in half. This middle point will become the tip of one of the holly leaves. Bend into a holly leaf shape, twist the two sides together at about the midway point, and the bend the remaining section into a second holly leaf shape, twisting the ends together to finish.<\/p>\n<p>2. Twist the red pipe cleaner around the middle of your two holly leaves, and bend into several holly berry shapes.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2646\" src=\"http:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Pipe-cleaner-holly.jpg\" alt=\"Pipe cleaner holly\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Pipe-cleaner-holly.jpg 600w, https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Pipe-cleaner-holly-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Pipe-cleaner-holly-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Pipe-cleaner-holly-250x167.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>3. Tie a loop of invisible nylon thread to the end of one of your holly leaves. Thread this loop onto a chopstick (or pencil), and check that the holly can easily dangle inside the jar with the chopstick balancing on top.<\/p>\n<div>\n<p>4. These next steps require adult supervision. (See safety notes below). Put on safety glasses. Fill a glass jar with boiling water. (Careful &#8211; the glass jar will become very hot!) Add Borax powder to the water, and stir. (Note: Borax is <span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">not<\/span> taste-safe.)<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-2645\" src=\"http:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Stirring-Borax.jpg\" alt=\"Stirring Borax\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Stirring-Borax.jpg 600w, https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Stirring-Borax-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Stirring-Borax-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/11\/Stirring-Borax-250x167.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The Borax will become suspended (ie, it will won&#8217;t settle on the bottom of the jar.) The actual quantity of Borax required will depend on the volume of your jar \u2013 allow for about 3 tablespoons per 250ml of water. Or just keep adding and stirring until you&#8217;ve saturated the mixture and you start to see Borax collect on the bottom.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>5. Lower the holly into the Borax suspension, balancing the chopstick on top. Double check that the holly isn&#8217;t touching the jar. Glass jars with boiling water inside will almost instantly become too hot to hold.<\/p>\n<p>Borax is a commonly used natural ingredient in grade school science experiments, and is safe for older kids to handle <em>when used responsibly<\/em>. It is not edible however, and will irritate if put into eyes. It is also a mild skin irritant for people with sensitive skin. I recommend using safety glasses and washing hands afterwards.<\/p>\n<p>With Borax being inedible, please make sure that your crystal creations are stored out of reach of babies, toddlers or pets (or hung high up, well out of reach, on your Christmas tree.)<\/p>\n<p>All kids\u2019 activities on this blog require attentive adult supervision. Every crystal formation is unique. It is commonly used as a detergent alternative or laundry booster, and so you should be able to find it in the laundry aisle of your local grocery store (or you can also <a href=\"http:\/\/amzn.to\/2f5HN4Z\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow\">buy it online<\/a>).<\/p>\n<p>If you mix a small quantity of Borax with water, it will become suspended, which means that the water molecules can \u2018hold\u2019 onto it for a while, before eventually settling to the bottom of the jar.<\/p>\n<p>If you heat up the water however, the water molecules move further apart, allowing more room for extra Borax to be suspended. As the water cools, the water molecules come closer together again, and can&#8217;t hold onto the same quantity of Borax as before. This is called supersaturation.
