I think these snowflakes are my favourite so far: they&#8217;re quite stunning, and I love <a href=\"https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/science-with-household-items\/\">science projects that only need everyday household materials<\/a> &#8211; no need to duck to the shops first!<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3895\" src=\"https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Salt-Crystal-Snowflakes-8.jpg\" alt=\"Salt Crystal Snowflakes 8\" width=\"600\" height=\"400\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Salt-Crystal-Snowflakes-8.jpg 600w, https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Salt-Crystal-Snowflakes-8-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Salt-Crystal-Snowflakes-8-150x100.jpg 150w, https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Salt-Crystal-Snowflakes-8-250x167.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<div class=\"info-box\">\n<h3 class=\"general\">Suitable for<\/h3>\n<p>This is would be a great activity for a group middle schoolers (<a href=\"https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/7-9years\/\">8-10 year olds<\/a>), who should be able to do most aspects by themselves. <a href=\"https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/5-6years\/\">Younger kids<\/a> (even <a href=\"https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/3-4years\/\">preschoolers<\/a>) can try this too, but they&#8217;ll need more help. (The salt crystal part is easy enough, but it&#8217;s actually the folding and cutting of the paper snowflakes that little kids will need the most help with). For reference, Jewel was 9 and Bumble Bee 7 when we did this.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3899\" src=\"https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Salt-Crystal-Snowflakes-13.jpg\" alt=\"Salt Crystal Snowflakes 13\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Salt-Crystal-Snowflakes-13.jpg 600w, https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Salt-Crystal-Snowflakes-13-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Salt-Crystal-Snowflakes-13-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/12\/Salt-Crystal-Snowflakes-13-250x250.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<div>\n<h2>How to make Salt Crystal Snowflakes<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: right;\"><!--more--><span style=\"font-size: small;\">(Please note: affiliate links<sup>*<\/sup> to similar products used are included below.)<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>We used:<\/p>\n<div>\n<ul>\n<li>regular <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/37WshQe\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">white paper<\/a><\/li>\n<li>pencil (optional)<\/li>\n<li>good quality <a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/35XeMy0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">scissors<\/a> (Note: &#8220;kid scissors&#8221; may not be sharp enough to cut through six layers of paper)<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/amzn.to\/2Y8R6UJ\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener noreferrer\">table salt<\/a><\/li>\n<li>hot water<\/li>\n<li>cup &amp; stirrer<\/li>\n<li>plate<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>You don&#8217;t need boiling water necessarily &#8211; hot water straight from the tap is fine (especially if you are doing this with younger kids where using boiling water would introduce the risk of scalding).<\/p>\n<h2>What to do<\/h2>\n<p><strong>The first stage is to create a six-sided paper snowflake!<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Here are the basic steps (and if you&#8217;re stuck, check out this <a href=\"https:\/\/www.instructables.com\/id\/How-to-Make-6-Pointed-Paper-Snowflakes\/\">six-sided paper snowflake tutorial<\/a> for more detailed instructions).<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3887\" src=\"https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Making-Salt-Crystal-Snowflakes.jpg\" alt=\"Making Salt Crystal Snowflakes\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Making-Salt-Crystal-Snowflakes.jpg 600w, https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Making-Salt-Crystal-Snowflakes-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Making-Salt-Crystal-Snowflakes-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Making-Salt-Crystal-Snowflakes-250x250.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>1. Cut your paper into a square.\u00a0 <\/strong>You can do this by folding one corner over until the side lines up, and then cut off the rectangular strip along the bottom. (Note: keep this strip to make mini snowflakes later on).<\/p>\n<p><strong>2. Fold your square in half diagonally, and then fold in half again. <\/strong>You should now have a right-angle triangle which is a quarter of the size of your original square.<\/p>\n<p><strong>3. Fold your triangle into thirds.<\/strong> Try really hard to get this step as precise as possible, because this will impact how symmetrical your snowflake ends up looking. Cut the base off at an angle<\/strong>. Design your snowflake!<\/strong> Begin cutting away from both sides &#8211; you can do triangles, curves, whatever you like! (Just make sure not to cut all the way across, or you&#8217;ll chop your snowflake in half!) Younger kids might like to draw their snowflake design in pencil, and then ask an adult do the cutting. (It can be tricky for little hands to cut through 6 layers of paper at once).<\/p>\n<p><strong>This second stage is the salt crystal science magic!<br \/>\n<\/strong><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-3884\" src=\"https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Making-salt-water.jpg\" alt=\"Making salt water\" width=\"600\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Making-salt-water.jpg 600w, https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Making-salt-water-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Making-salt-water-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/gosciencekids.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/11\/Making-salt-water-250x250.jpg 250w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 600px) 100vw, 600px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><strong>6. Add a 2-3 teaspoons of salt to a cup, and add just enough hot water to dissolve all the salt. Stir.<\/strong> This is the part where you can talk about &#8220;solutions&#8221; and &#8220;supersaturation&#8221; and all that fantastic science stuff! Put your snowflake onto a shallow plate, and pour salt water on top. <\/strong>Make sure all the snowflake is covered. Set aside for a few days until the water has evaporated and the salt has crystallised. You&#8217;ll hopefully notice that the salt crystals have formed into perfect little cubes! And that the crystals have formed only on the one (top) side of the paper! Display them!\u00a0<\/strong>Salt crystal snowflakes make a great winter themed decorations. You can add double sided tape to the back and stick on a wall or window. Or you could stick a loop of ribbon or thread to the back, and hang up on your Christmas tree!<\/p>\n<p><strong>9. Make more! <\/strong>Remember those horizontal cut offs from when you first cut your paper square? Use those to make mini snowflakes! The molecules in ice crystals join to one another in a hexagonal structure, an arrangement which allows water molecules &#8211; each with one oxygen and two hydrogen atoms &#8211; to form together in the most efficient way.<\/p>\n<p>Salt (sodium chloride) dissolves in water, because of the polarity of the water. Positive sodium ions bond with the negative part of the water molecule, and negative chloride ions bond with the positive part of the water molecule.<\/p>\n<p>Salt crystals are cubic.
